Built in 1966 by Invergordon Distillers to meet increasing demand, Tamnavulin is located near the River Livet. As is to be expected, its production was at the time used for the blends of the group, which owned other distilleries, including Bruichladdich and Jura. In 1995, following a decade of overproduction and two years after Invergordon was bought by Whyte & Mackay, the distillery ceased production, only starting up again in 2007. Tamnavulin now has its own range of single malts.

It was common practice in the 19th century for Speyside distilleries to use the name “Glenlivet” instead of their own to indicate both quality and origin. The threats and legal action taken by George Smith and his agent Andrew Usher led to a compromise being reached in 1884, so that the name could only be used if in conjunction with the distillery’’s own name and only for certain distilleries. Tamnavulin had only been founded in 1965, yet, as it was the only distillery apart from Glenlivet to actually be located in the valley of the River Livet, it naturally adopted the practice, which was gradually phased out in the 80s and 90s. It was one of the last to continue the practice and independent bottlings can still be found under the name “Tamnavulin-Glenlivet”.
