Wine for sale: Château des Rontets
Château des Rontets
Claire Gazeau and her husband Fabio Montrasi took up this Pouilly-Fuissé domain in 1995. Both architects by profession, they turned to winemaking, immediately setting their standards extremely high and aiming to showcase the exceptional terroir that Château des Rontets boasts: six hectares of limestone soils at a high altitude, in the ‘Rontets’ climat. The resulting wines – among the finest in the Côte d’Or - are sought after by those in the know for their impressive tension: these are true gems.
The Château des Rontets, situated in Fuissé, is a family domain that was founded in the 19th century. It has been in the same family since 1870. The domain is now run by Claire Gazeau (great grandaughter of Francois Varambon who initially bought the property) and her husband Fabio Montrasi . It is situated on a plot of land of 5.6 hectacres at the top of a hill known locally as Les Rontets that looks out over the village of Fuissé. The estate has another plot of 0.5 hectacres in Pierrefolle, as well as another half hectacre in Côte de Besset in the commune of Saint-Amour. Since 2005 they have had organic certification. This domain has risen to a very high standard. Anything from Château Rontet is a sound investment.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...
BETTANE & DESSEAUVE
We can easily understand why the Montrasi couple quit their profession (architects in Italy) to take up this family estate and reconvert as winemakers: the location is magical. Slowly but surely, they have raised this seven-hectare property to the top tier of the Puilly-Fuissé appellation. Tireless, organic work in the vines and long, careful élevages result in cuvées of unparalleled character. This domain is the Mâconnais’ diamond in the rough. A wonderful discovery for any wine lover and an inspiration for producers in the region.
LA REVUE DU VIN DE FRANCE
Architects turned winegrowers, Franco-Italian couple Claire and Fabio Gazeau-Montrasi, have gained recognition for their excellent wines. They produce refined and complex Pouilly-Fuissé on a unique terroir at an altitude of 360m. Thanks to long élevages (just under 2 years for the cuvées Birbettes and Pierrefolle), the wines reveal rare ripeness and balance. The domain gained organic certification in 2005 and is composed primarily of Chardonnay vines in Fuissé, with half a hectare of Gamay in Saint-Amour.
