Information
Scotland, Speyside. Distillery operational. Owner: Inver House Distillers
When it was incorporated into Inver House Distillers in 1997, Balmenach joined a pool of distilleries composed of Knockdhu (An Cnoc), Speyburn, Pulteney and Balblair. This independent company also owned the blends Catto's, Hankey Bannister, Glen Flagler, Pinwinnie and MacArthur's. Despite the change in owner (previously United Distillers), Balmenach remains to this day a little-known distillery and even more of a niche malt. Its own-name versions are limited to a handful of bottlings, such as a 14 year old bottling in the Flora & Fauna range and a few vintages in the Highland Selection range. Two versions under the name Balmenach-Glenlivet aged 14 years and 19 years respectively were bottled in the mid-80s for the Italian company Sestante.
A Balmenach distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2020, matured for 13 years in a refill bourbon barrel. This is a limited edition of 226 bottles for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by a group of friends with a particular passion for whisky. The club selects casks whose bottles are then only available to members. The name of the distillery is not mentioned on the label but each distillery is given a number as the malt is bottled. The first cask selected by the SMWS, for example, was Glenfarclas, and it therefore uses the number 1. The second number refers to the number of bottlings from each distillery. The club was sold to Glenmorangie in 2004 and then to a group of investors in 2016.
