Information
André Romero, a very enthusiastic winegrower, created Domaine La Soumade in 1979. His son Frédéric joined him in 1996 complete with a BEPA professional diploma in viticulture and oenology. In 2002, they began working with Stéphane Derenoncourt who introduced gentler and more precise vinification techniques to improve the purity and finesse of the wines. Today, the property covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas, on a small vineyard plot near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay-limestone soils make for powerful wines with excellent ageing potential.
The Grenache Noir and Syrah grapes that make up this cuvée come from teenage vines (15 years old) whose yields have been limited to 30 hl/ha. After manual harvesting and sorting on tables, the domain follows a traditional winemaking process with daily punching down and pumping over in open stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasts for 15-25 days. The wine is matured on fine lees for 18 months in 600-litre demi-muid barrels. This Gigondas is a racy, powerful wine with character to spare. Its full body and beautiful volume enable it to form a powerful pairing with a dish of roast pork and prunes.
