Gauby

Fifteen varietals, diverse terroirs, and a bold approach to their style and methods have made Domaine Gauby a go-to producer in the Roussillon. These elegant wines reveal the very essence of their terroir, havig moved away from regional tradition.

This property has gained legendary status in Roussillon. 20 kilometres from Perpignan in the middle of a large area of grassland, garrigues and forests, the 45-hectare vineyard benefits from an excellent climate and geographical position, where the coolness from the altitude (150 to 300 metres) tempers the summer heat. Furthermore, the well-preserved, still partially wild region presents a magnificent landscape. The schist, clay and marl soil allow the vines to grow very deep roots, which gives the wines additional complexity. The terroirs look over the sea to the east; the vines are planted on areas of sedimentary limestone to the north and schist to the south that exist in overlapping vertical strata. Resolute in their respect for the environment, Gérard Gauby and his son Lionel stopped using chemical treatments a long time ago, replacing insecticides and weed control products with "house" concoctions of essential oils and composts. Their focus is on elegance and freshness in the wines, and the path they have chosen would seem to be a successful one.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...

BETTANE & DESSEAUVE

Gérard Gauby, helped out by his son Lionel, has brought the production of his wines to legendary status in the Roussillon region. (…) Their wines are pure and delicate, concentrated without being heavy. They turned away from the rigidity of the appellations in 2014, complanting late-ripening varietals (…) and pay close attention to their water use, all whilst integrating trees and bushes around their vineyard.

LA REVUE DU VIN DE FRANCE

Since the mid-1980s Gérard Gauby, a highly demanding vintner, has been on a quest to craft fine and wine with perfect balance, helped by his son Lionel and his wife Ghislaine. At many points, he has questioned his methods, developing a style of taut and easy-drinking wines, an evolution that has drawn in many admirers. Never hiding from a risk, this is a constant project which has brought the importance of expression and the generosity of the fruit back into the foreground. These wines also reveal the complexity of the geologically varied terroir of Calce. We salute the path of this family that has managed to open up new paths and reinvent southern viticulture.
