Information
Located 40 kilometres away from Bordeaux on the left bank of the Garonne, the Château Lamothe was built on the back of a Merovingian fort in the 16th century. The estate's past has mirrored that of its many owners, who divided it up, sold it off and shared it out as they went along. In 1855 however, it met with notable success and was elevated to the status of Second Cru Classé. But it wasn't until the 20th century that it was returned to stability, when Jean Despujols bought eight hectares of vines on gravel and clay in 1961. Since then, the vineyard has always been owned by the same family. His son Guy Despujols has managed the property since 1989. The very small amounts collected allow the harvest to be very precisely monitored, and the wine to be slowly vinified with no settling. Lamothe's defining characteristic is the wonderful location of its château. Whichever way you look, spectacular views await here. The vineyard is located west of the village of Sauternes overlooking the Ciron Valley, close to Guiraud, la Tour Blanche and Filhot. The climate here is exceptionally well-balanced thanks to intense sunshine moderated by refreshing, ever-present winds. All the ingredients are here to result in grapes affected by noble rot. The Estate sells a second wine, the Tourelles de Lamothe.
The wines of the Château Lamothe are rich and full-bodied. Because of the quantities of Sémillon used, they boast wonderful colour, a nose featuring acacia, developing aromas of peach and pear on the palate. A magnificent, perfectly balanced wine.
