Information
Destilerías Unidas S.A. (DUSA), originally known as Unidas S.A. (LUSA), was built in 1959 at the foot of the Andes in Venezuela to replace a small local distillery that had been in operation for some 15 years. The Canadian company Seagram, which was already a majority shareholder, took over in 1992 and then sold its shares to Diageo and Pernod Ricard in 2001, before these were again sold to José R. Ballesteros Melendez. The distillery uses molasses and cane sugar to produce rums in various types of column and pot stills, in both heavy and light styles. Diplomatico fans will enjoy the distillery’‘s trademark rich and rounded style.
A Diplomatico 2001 finished in sherry casks after maturation in bourbon and single malt casks. A blend of rum produced in a pot still and batch kettle, in a semi-continuous distillation method invented in Canada and used at Diplomatico since 1959. It consists of a copper cylinder equipped with a column with several plates that precisely separate the various elements in the distillate from each other. The Maestros Roneros collect what remains from the previous distillation and add it to the next.
