Information
A distillery within a distillery, Mosstowie was produced in Miltonduff’‘s Lomond still from 1964 to 1981. The Lomond stills were originally installed to enable the then owner Hiram Walker to produce a wider variety of whisky for blends like Ballantine’‘s. The project was never much of a success and was abandoned 17 years later. No official bottlings of the Mosstowie single malt were ever released and only a handful of independent bottlers were lucky enough to bottle these highly prized (and very rare) bottlings.
A Mosstowie 17 year old bottled by Sestante, who bottled several 17 and 18 year olds in the 1980s. Founded in 1977 in Parma by Ernesto Mainardi, Sestante is an Italian bottler and importer. Formerly working for Co. Import, Mainardi began working for himself after meeting George Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail, from whom he began importing bottlings. He launched his own selections in 1985, in two versions, one cask strength and the other under cask strength. Sestante and Silver Seal, the other business Mainardi founded in 2000, were sold in 2010 to Massimo Righi, owner of Whisky Antique.
