Information
Monymusk is the main brand produced at the Clarendon distillery (National Rums of Jamaica), which is located on the site of the Monymusk sugar plantation from which it takes its name. It is today owned jointly by the Jamaican government, Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana and Maison Ferrand in France. Clarendon was built in 1949. Originally it was a small distillery equipped with a single Vendome still, which was joined in 2009 by a larger still and a five-column still. The distillery’s warehouses are located at the Inswood distillery, which is also owned by National Rums of Jamaica and closed in 1992.
A Monymusk 9 year old distilled in the Clarendon column still in 2010 and bottled at cask strength in 2019. Marked MBS, it has a congener content of 308.4 g/hlpa and an ester content of 152.2 g/hlpa. A blend of 15 casks and a limited edition of 4,600 bottles. Velier was founded in Genoa by Casimir Chaix in 1947. It was originally a small, family-run business specializing in the import and distribution of wine and spirits. Luca Gargano, a former representative for Saint James and serious rum collector and enthusiast, bought the business in 1986 and began bottling whisky first in 1992 and then rum in 1996. Rums selected by Velier are only ever aged in a tropical climate, which explains both their concentration and the high angels’’ share. They are generally bottled at cask strength or just below. The company’’s selections from Diamond’’s vaults as well as the Caroni bottlings and the bottlings from various distilleries in Jamaica, Barbados and other countries have played a key role in rum’’s history and are today some of the most sought-after in the category.
