Information
Scotland, Speyside. Distillery operational. Owner: La Martiniquaise
In 1923, Glen Moray became the owner of Macdonald & Muir, which at the time owned the Glenmorangie distillery. It was in the wake of this giant that Glen Moray forged its path. A path characterized first by the blends of the company it had joined, Bailie Nicol Jarvie (BNJ), James Martin and Highland Queen, and then from the 80s by its own bottlings aged 5, 8 and 12 years old. The late 1980s saw the release of a series of vintages, including bottlings from 1960, 1963, 1964 and 1959, which formed a collection in and of themselves.
A Glen Moray distilled in 1986 and bottled in 2018, matured for 31 years in a first-fill Sauternes cask. This is a limited edition of 139 bottles for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by a group of friends with a particular passion for whisky. The club selects casks whose bottles are then only available to members. The name of the distillery is not mentioned on the label but each distillery is given a number as the malt is bottled. The first cask selected by the SMWS, for example, was Glenfarclas, and it therefore uses the number 1. The second number refers to the number of bottlings from each distillery. The club was sold to Glenmorangie in 2004 and then to a group of investors in 2016.
