Information
Scotland, Speyside. Distillery operational. Owner: Diageo
In addition to appearing together in the Six Classics Malts range, Cragganmore and Lagavulin became closely linked in 1923 when Sir Peter Mackie bought Cragganmore Distillery and incorporated it into the company Mackie & Co. - White Horse Distillers. Cragganmore become a key malt in the company's blends White Horse and Old Parr, before it was bought in 1927 by DCL (Distillers Company Limited). Loved by enthusiasts and connoisseurs, Cragganmore remains a niche single malt. Its 12 Year Old version, with a cream label, has been its standard bearer for over 20 years. Only one previous 12 year old version released by D&J McCallum Limited, Edinburgh is today a true collectors item.
A Cragganmore distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2020, matured for 18 years in a first-fill bourbon hogshead, then in a first-fill Pedro Ximenez hogshead. This is a limited edition of 223 bottles for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by a group of friends with a particular passion for whisky. The club selects casks whose bottles are then only available to members. The name of the distillery is not mentioned on the label but each distillery is given a number as the malt is bottled. The first cask selected by the SMWS, for example, was Glenfarclas, and it therefore uses the number 1. The second number refers to the number of bottlings from each distillery. The club was sold to Glenmorangie in 2004 and then to a group of investors in 2016.
