Information
Jean-Louis Grippat's domain in Tournon sur Rhône is one of the iconic vineyards in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Reds and whites alike, their wines have such subtlety and elegance, perfectly balanced with dense aromas and flavour from the grape varietals. One thing is certain: these wines lend themselves to ageing, only intensifying their exceptional elegance.
A big name in the world of Rhône vineyards, Hermitage was being enjoyed in the Antiquity era under the appellation name of Vin de Vienne. It was only in the 17th century that is became known as Ermitage and a lot later as Hermitage, in remembrance of Gaspard de Stérimberg who decided to retire there in the 13th century after returning from the Crusades. Loved by Henri IV and by Louis XIII, it even became the preferred wines of the Russian Tsars in the 17th century.
Spreading over almost 134 hectares of hillsides, the vines sink their roots into soil made of granite sand covered in mica schists and gneiss but also alluvial pebbles. Created from Syrah grapes, Hermitage can also contain up to 15% of white varieties such as Roussanne and Marsanne. Matured in oak barrels, this deep ruby red wine reveals an intense nose with dashes of violets, blackcurrants and sweet spices. Powerful and fleshy, it gains a roundness and suppleness as the years go by and possesses an incredible longevity. It pairs well with dishes that have a lot of character like a slow cooked leg of lamb with quince.
