Information
The Joseph Phelps vineyards produce one of the most prestigious wine ranges in the United States. Most of the wines are remarkable in quality. The Insignia leads the way. This spectacular and flamboyant wine has exceptional ageing potential. Aged in 100% new oak barrels, the Insignia features intense aromas of oak, spices, toast and dark fruit. Restricted production makes this wine highly sought-after by connoisseurs around the world.
Initially known for its Rhone blends, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has since earned a reputation for its Bordeaux varietals. This particular cuvée centres on Cabernet Sauvignon, completed by a touch of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. The grapes are sourced primarily from vineyards in Saint Helena, Oak Knoll, Stag’s Leap, and Rutherford. In other words, some of the best terroir in Napa Valley.
18 months of French and American oak maturation, of which 50% is new, adds significant complexity to an already intense wine. On the nose, one can expect notes of violet, black fruits, tabaco, spice, and a hint of aromatic herbs. On the palate, its supple tannins serve as the backdrop for flavours of black cherry, plum, and blackberry, with a hint of vanilla. Both concentrated and energetic, the wine displays beautiful finesse and would pair perfectly with duck. It can be cellared for an additional 20 years.
