Information
Scotland, Speyside. Distillery operational. Owner: Gordon & MacPhail.
Independent & family-ownedUntil it reopened on 3 August 1998, activity at the Benromach distillery was characterized by a series of short periods of production followed by long periods of mothballing. This cycle ended in 1993 when the independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail bought the site and its small stock (the distillery ceased production on 24 March 1983). To celebrate the site's opening, an expression celebrating the distillery's 100 year anniversary was produced, the Benromach Centenary Bottling 1898-1998, limited to 3,500 bottles. It was the first in a long series, with the new owners releasing numerous new bottlings to make up for lost time.
A Benromach distilled in 1969 and bottled in 2004. The distillation dates from the era of Distillers Company Limited (DCL), who kept the distillery open from 1953 to 1983, the year in which it closed, ten years before being bought by Gordon & MacPhail and returning to operation five years later. This is therefore a Benromach from the old distillery, whose style is quite different from the one known today.
