About the producer
Beefeater gin, created in 1820 by pharmacist James Burrough, is produced in Kennington from grain spirit. It bought the Chelsea Distillery on Cale Street to produce its gin but, when it became a hit, moved production to another site and finally to Kennington. The Burrough family sold Beefeater to Whitbread in 1987. The brand was part of the Allied Domecq portfolio until 2005 when Allied Domecq was bought by Pernod Ricard. Beefeater takes its name from the figure depicted on the bottle—a Yeoman Warder or Beefeater, responsible for guarding the Tower of London.
