Founded by eight friends from the Royal Institute of Technology, the Mackmyra distillery opened in the province of Gästrikland in 1999, becoming Sweden’‘s first distillery. It takes its name from the village and manor of the same name. The first distillation was completed in 2002 and the first whisky released in 2006. A second distillery was built in 2011 a few miles from the first and named Gravity because of its use of gravity to lower its environmental impact. This reflects the spirit of the business, which never misses an opportunity to innovate in areas such as artificial intelligence, wood, local peat and barley, and maturation.

A special edition of Mackmyra bottled in 2009 to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary. A blend of small (30 litre) bourbon, sherry and new Swedish oak casks.
