Information
The quality of Durfort's wines was recognized at the end of the 18th century; Thomas Jefferson, the American ambassador and future president of the United States, placed it directly after Lafite, Latour and Margaux in his fascinating travel journals. His opinion was confirmed in the 1855 classification when it was ranked a second growth. The vineyard consists of several plots, surrounded by vines belonging to Château Margaux. For many years, the wines produced did not meet the expectations of its second growth classification. Since Gonzague Lurton is at the head of this beautiful property, the quality has undeniably increased. Since 2016, Durfort Vivens has been Demeter certified. This proves the new owners'diligence to create great wines.
Promoted to deuxième cru classé in the 1855 classification, Château Dufort-Vivens has always been lauded by critics. For its finest cuvée, of course, but also for its second wines, always crafted with great precision. Made from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the Relais cuvée is a prime example of their success. The property’s 55 hectares of vines grow in deep, gravelly terroirs. Uncommon in Bordeaux, the vineyard has been cultivated biodynamically since 2011. The grapes are harvested by hand in wood and concrete containers specific to each parcel. The wine is later matured in French oak casks. This cuvée has a deep, ruby colour, and its bouquet carries notes of cherry and redcurrant with white flowers and spices. On the palate this is a silky wine with elegant tannins.
