Information
Massa Vecchia is located to the north of Maremma in Tuscany on the slopes of the Metallifere hill. The domain spans 6 hectares: 3.6 of vines, 1.5 of olives trees and 0.8 cereals. Every year, the domain produces 15,000 bottles of wine. It was founded by Fabrizio Niccolaini and his wife Patrizia Bartolini in 1985. Their daughter Patrizia, along with business partners Daniel and Ines Wattenhofer, Thoams Frischknecht and Rocco Delli Colli. Respecting nature is at the heart of the work in the domain. Man is thus a mere guardian of natural processes, intervening very little if at all.
From Sangiovese and Alicante grapes, this cuvée comes from masterfully treated vines. The grape is destemmed, then fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. The grape macerates for 20 days in open, truncated, wooden containers. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occurs in the same containers, equally for 20 days. The wine is then raised in casks and barrels for 18 months. The wine matures for 6 further months in the bottle. All of this makes for a wine that is deep and balanced with a surprising finish.
