Information
The domaine was established in 1950 by Luigi Pira. It is located in Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the Langhe region near Barolo and in the vicinity of other prestigious domaines such as Angelo Gaja’s vineyard. It is without a shadow of a doubt a rising star among the Piedmont vineyards. The Azienda spans some ten hectares on the Marenca, Margheria and Vignarionda terroirs. In fact, it shares some parcels with Angelo Gaja, another major Piedmontese big hitter. Cultivated without chemicals, the vines produce powerful structured wines which are richly complex. It gets the most out of its Nebbiolo grapes but is still in the shadow of certain Barolo stars. It is a boon for fine Italian wine aficionados. Gianpaolo Pira has now taken over the reins at the domaine. It is setting the bar high and its wines have the potential to age for 25 years and sometimes more.
The Barbera d'Alba from the Luigi Pira domaine is aged for 12 months in wooden barrels and larger formats. The nose delivers a fine balance between fruitiness, forest floor, and subtle woody notes. It is mouth-filling, well-balanced and fresh on the palate, with spicy notes in the finish.
