Information
In the heart of the Loire, Château du Hureau has been making superb wines since the end of the eighteenth century. Generation after generation, vines have been grown on twenty or so hectares divided into twenty parcels spread across the famous communes of Saumur, Souzay-Champigny and Dampierre. The land is planted primarily with Cabernet Franc which reigns supreme in the Saumur Champigny appellation. As for Chenin Blanc, it is used to produce white Saumur wines and Coteaux de Saumur. The vines develop on a terroir that is typical for the area, being composed primarily of tufa and limestone. Philippe Vatan has been running this organically certified domaine since 2011, assisted by his daughter Agathe over the past few years. Together they make red wines with great finesse, dry white wines and even dessert and sweet wines, whenever the climat allows it.
Even if Chenin Blanc is only a minor part of their vineyard, Philippe Vatan and his daughter nevertheless pay it great attention. Grown organically, its yields are limited, the grape harvests are carried out in successive sorting and the wine is fermented and aged in wood. Its perfect balance of sugar and acidity means it can be kept for several years in the cellar and can be enjoyed with coquilles Saint Jacques ... or with local goat’s cheese.
