Information
Finca Villacreces was founded by Pedre de Villacreces, after whom the domaine is named. He was a Franciscan monk who settled in the region to devote himself to prayer and working the land. He cultivated a few parcels of grapes for his own personal consumption. The vineyard is located above the river Douro and the vines span 64 hectares divided into some fifteen parcels of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The varied soils contribute to the diversity of the wines. Yields are naturally low, partly because of the harsh climate and the high altitude (700 metres above sea level).
Pruno is produced in the well-known Ribera del Duero appellation and has been praised by the wine critics, including Robert Parker who named it "the best Spanish wine for under 20 dollars". This blend of Tinto Fino and Cabernet Sauvignon has benefited from a continental climate with low rainfall. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted meticulously before vinification in stainless steel vats. The wine is then matured in French oak for one year which gives its aromas the subtlest hint of wood.
