Information
This splendid property dates back to the 17th century and was classified as a fifth growth in 1855. It enjoys a good reputation with wine enthusiasts, especially since the 1990s, when major initiatives undertaken to improve the wine began to bear fruit. The property was purchased in 1971 and totally restructured and enlarged. However, the real turning point was in 2004 when CA Grands Crus (Crédit Agricole Bank) bought the château and optimized the vineyard. At the same time, Denis Dubourdieu was called in as consultant oenologist. Today, the 40 hectares of vines are distributed over three plots with gravelly soil that, on the northern edge, adjoin the prestigious châteaux of Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet. In the centre they are located around Grand Puy, and to the south, on the Saint Lambert plateau. Grand-Puy Ducasse also produces a second wine that is called Prélude à Grand-Puy Ducasse.
The second wine of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse, this cuvée is made from the domaine’s younger vines (20 years). Sustainable farming, hand harvests, meticulous sorting and a parcel by parcel vinification in thermoregulated stainless steel define the winemaking. Oak barriques with only a very small proportion of new oak are used for the elevage, ensuring a fresh, fruit forward wine. Delicate yet harmonious, this wine does not need years in the cellar to reveal its charms.
