Information
Maison Martin Schaetzel, who had been producing wines since 1852, was bought by businessman Marc Rinaldi in 2015 and has since been rechristened Domaine Martin Schaetzel by Kirrenbourg. Jean Schaetzel is stil present in the cellar and the decision to convert to biodynamic farming is very much in line with these vintners' profound respect for the singularity of the Alsatian terroir. This domaine stretches over 9 hectares, prominenelty featuring the Schlossberg and Brand Grand Crus which cover 7 hectares alone. The real raison d'être of this domaine is to elevate Pinot Noir and Riesling: two of the most iconic Alsatian grape varieties.
The Grand Cru Eichberg has been renowned for the quality of its wines since the 11th Century. The soil structure here consists of marly-limestone with areas of clay and the climate is dry and warm: ideal conditions for growing Pinot Gris. Wines from this terroir are seductively elegant; perfectly balanced with notes of white-fleshed fruits, basil and a gripping minerality. The utmost care is exercised in the vineyard and and the cellar alike with manual harvests, whole cluster pressing and maturation on fine lees. This reverent respect of terroir and the vinification process results in a wine which expresses a remarkably rich and full-bodied character.
