Information
In 1960 Gaston Richaud married and his wife inherited 12 hectares. He swapped his trade as a cabinet maker for winegrowing and 14 years later, his son Marcel took over at the tender age of 17. Marcel parted company with the cooperative he and his father supplied grapes to and in 1987 he took over a very fine 3-hectare single vineyard, l'Ebrescade. This is when people began to notice him. Marcel Richaud is both passionate and meticulous. He strives constantly to come up with new ways to cultivate the land, prune the vines and to make and mature the wine. The Cairanne appellation has him to thank for its full cru status, granted in 2015. His son Thomas and daughter Claire have gradually taken over the reins of the business and were recently joined by Edith.
The wines are produced following a natural and no-intervention approach and become more refined by the vintage. This is one name in the region you don't want to miss.
L"Ebrescade comes – of course – from the terroir of L'Ebrescade along the hillsides where the Cairanne and Rasteau appellations meet. Marcel Richaud has produced a carefully-made cairanne : he works the soil in a microbially friendly way, and adopts a natural approach to winemaking. Elevage is performed in barrique and demi-muid barrels. The wine is intensely coloured, with a garnet palette. The tertiary notes are reminiscent of plum, leather and humus. The mouthfeel is both polished and full bodied. There are nice fruity touches, rounded off with smoky, spicy notes. The same spices are also found in the long finish. Enjoy this cuvée with a sausage in brioche bread, or a poultry liver salad.
