Information
Cloudy Bay, established in 1985 by David Hohnen (one of the founders of Cape Mentelle in Australia) and Kevin Judd, is located in Marlborough, the largest wine region in New Zealand, in the far north of the country. This unique wine-producing region boasts a maritime climate, which is quite cool, and optimal sunshine. The vineyards span 200 hectares, divided into four parcels situated in different sub-regions of Marlborough. The oldest vines belong to the Estate Vineyard and were planted in 1986. The other vineyards (Mustang Vineyard, Widow Block and Barracks Block) were created at a later date and were planted between 1995 and 2004. Cloudy Bay also buys in grapes from small regional producers. The main grape variety is Sauvignon Blanc, whose characteristic Cloudy Bay wines have earned the domaine its reputation.
Cloudy Bay also produced the Te Wahi vintage, a pinot noir from the vineyards of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn, planted in the Central Otago region. The cuvée's "Te Wahi" name comes from the Maori word for `place', a name chosen because pinot noir reflects the characteristic style of its region. Aromas of dark fruit and cherries The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new.
