Information
In the southern Rhône lies Domaine Charvin. The estate's 32 hectares are managed by the 6th generation of the family and produces wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes-du-Rhône appellations. Syrah and Grenache account for 90% of the vineyard, the rest being planted to Vaccaèse and Mourvèdre. The average age of vines is 45 (Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and 35 (Côtes-du-Rhône). They cultivated according to traditional methods and the grapes are harvested by hand; Yields are limited to 30hl/ha for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 50hl/ha for the Côtes du Rhône. Vinifications are also traditional with no destemming or filtration. The domain produces, on average, 100,000 bottles a year.
Domaine Charvin stretches over 32 hectares and is certified organic with harvests being carried out by hand. Non-destemmed Grenache (90%) and Carignan (10%), which make up this Côtes du Rhône, are macerated for considerable time before alcoholic fermentation takes place in concrete vats and interspersed with daily pump-over. Bottling is carried out without prior fining or filtration. Also aged in concrete vats, the wine was bottled 13 months after its harvest.
Tasting reveals a garnet-red coloured wine which flashed cherry red in the light. The nose holds notes of red and black fruits as well as spices. Round and powerful, it exudes real finesse and fine elegance thanks to a hint of freshness. This lovely wine can be enjoyed when young or after a few years resting in the cellar. Serve this wine at 16°C after having allowed it to breathe or placing it in a carafe two hours earlier. Pair it with roasted lamb, Basque fish terrine or duck confit lasagne.
