Information
Yves Gangloff is a major figure in the Rhône Valley and an artistic winemaker who expresses a unique sensibility through his wines. A rock music fan from the Alsace region, with a somewhat bohemian lifestyle, Yves settled in the area after meeting his future wife Mathilde when he was staying with his brother at the Château d'Ampuis in the 1970s. To make a living he started working as a labourer at Domaine Delas. Here, on the steep terraces of the Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu he got a feel for and learned the basics of viticulture. At the same time, Gaston Andre, a local winegrower offered the couple a plot of vines. And so the Gangloff myth began. In the early days, Mathilde and Yves sold their grapes to the trade but in 1992 they bottled their first vintage. Success came quickly so they expanded their vineyards which have been managed by their children Loup and Elsa since Mathilde's death in 2011.
Condrieu is by nature an extremely flavoursome, refined wine. However, Yves Gangloff has elevated his own example to rival any white in this appellation. Its apricot and honey notes are complemented by fresh notes of white flowers. It has a direct, full-bodied, creamy attack. This extremely generous wine persists for a long time thanks to an acidity at the finish that ends with toasted almond flavours. In short, this wine is incredibly complex and provides a perfect blend of flavours, freshness and texture. To produce this Condrieu, Yves Gangloff uses manual harvesting, destemming, maceration in thermoregulated stainless steel vats and racking. The wine is then matured for one year in 300L barrique barrels. Exceptional wines make for exceptional pairings: ideal as an apéritif with a pan-fried foie gras. Definitely also a cuvée to be drunk with a dessert: an apricot tart will make a sublime pairing. Cellar this wine for a good decade.
