Information
The Perrin family, who have resided in Courthézon since the 16th century, are among the best wine producers in the South Rhône Valley. Today, Jean-Pierre and François (sons of Jacques Perrin) and their children (Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu) – who represent the family’s fifth-generation of winemakers – have taken up the mantle. In just a few years the Perrin family have become one of the most influential wine dynasties in the world, thanks to their exceptional Château de Beaucastel vineyard which covers 70 hectares (60 of which are cultivated) and is planted with the 13 permitted grape varietals. On average, the vines are around 50 years old, and yields never exceed 30 hectolitres per hectare – often much less. For fifteen years, the two sides of the Perrin family have developed in parallel, acquiring vines in their name in other appellations in the southern Rhône Valley and securing their reputation as experts in this part of the region. Among these acquisitions is Domaine du Clos des Tourelles: a 10 hectare vineyard adjoining the village of Gigondas, planted with three very old Grenache vines. The Tourelles vineyard features 80% Grenache vines as well as Syrah, Cinsault and Mourdèvre; all benefit from the soil featuring limestone, sand and marl.
Made of Grenache and Syrah, this Vinsobres has been vinified in new barriques and aged for a year, again in barriques. On tasting, it unfurls in a complex and generous register. There are notes of black fruit, mocha, sweet spices and cocoa. Its powerful tannins and impressive length mean it can be paired with tasty dishes like sautéed lamb with black olives.
