Information
Yves Gangloff is a major figure in the Rhône Valley and an artistic winemaker who expresses a unique sensibility through his wines. A rock music fan from the Alsace region, with a somewhat bohemian lifestyle, Yves settled in the area after meeting his future wife Mathilde when he was staying with his brother at the Château d'Ampuis in the 1970s. To make a living he started working as a labourer at Domaine Delas. Here, on the steep terraces of the Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu he got a feel for and learned the basics of viticulture. At the same time, Gaston Andre, a local winegrower offered the couple a plot of vines. And so the Gangloff myth began. In the early days, Mathilde and Yves sold their grapes to the trade but in 1992 they bottled their first vintage. Success came quickly so they expanded their vineyards which have been managed by their children Loup and Elsa since Mathilde's death in 2011.
Yve Gangloff has produced a Côte-Rôtie of great complexity and exceptional refinement. The secret of his success is the blend of grapes from different parcels, each characterised by the diversity of soils (schist, granite, limestone, etc.), and also the blend of two different grape varieties. He has enhanced the 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier, a white grape which lends elegance and refinement. Cultivation methods are sustainable, and harvesting is manual; fermentation is conducted in thermoregulated stainless vats, and lastly, élevage in barrique barrels lasts for 20 months. Barbarine offers an intense expression of its red and black berry aromas. Its indulgent fruitiness has great length, affording a delicious sensation of velvety depth. This wine should be kept for many years (at least 20 years) and enjoyed with special dishes such as veal kidneys with porcini mushrooms.
