Information
The Poggio Scalette domaine owes it name to the shape of its vineyards, which are planted in terraces separated by low stone walls. The estate is located in a little hilltop town in the Greve commune in the north-east of the Chianti appellation. This vineyard, which was planted with Sangiovese after World War I, produces one of the finest “Super Tuscans”, of which the Il Carbonaione cuvée is an outstanding example. This wine, whose first vintage dates from 1992, does not conform to the Chianti appellation, whose specification outlaws single varietal Sangiovese wines. The vineyard is organically managed.
It was one of the most highly renowned Italian wine experts, Vittorio Fiore, who produced this wine starting in 1991, in the heart of Tuscany's most beautiful regions in the Greve valley, in Chianti Classico. This cuvée is aged in 350-litre French oak barrels for 12 months. After bottling, the wine remains on the estate for six months prior to being sold. This pure sangiovese is a deep, dense wine that is extremely intense and complex. Elegant, noble tannins, a smooth, melting texture (after a few years of ageing) reflect its scope. This cuvée can be aged for up to 30 years.
