Information
Founded by Henri Georges at the beginning of the 20th century on 14.50 ha of vines at Nuit Saint Georges, the domain is managed today by his two great-grandsons, Grégory and Antoine. For environmental reasons, some of the vineyards have grassed alleys. Yield selection and grape sorting, followed by 18 months of maturing in oak barrels, produce wines that are characteristic of their terroir. The domain has experienced a real stylistic revolution over recent years. It used to produce the most concentrated and tannic wines from this cold and late terroir. When young, the wines could be austere, but with a huge ageing potential of over 30 years. Keeping this immense potential, they are now more focused on finesse, which is a great development for this exceptional domain.
At the end of the 19th century, most of the communes of Burgundy appended the names of the best plots to their own. Thus it was that the "Saint-Georges" climat was added to the name of the village of Nuits in 1898. This gives some idea of the importance of this exceptional premier cru, often considered as "the grand cru of Nuits", even though the commune does not officially have one. Henri Gouges's Saint-Georges is one of the densest wines of the Côte de Nuits. It is a wine with an earthy nose, evoking undergrowth and pencil lead. It will require at least twenty years' aging before it starts to deliver. Its body, concentration and length make it a one-of-a-kind wine.
