Information
The seven hectares of the Engel domain cover some of the most prestigious Côte de Nuits appellations: Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux and Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru. Philippe Engel took over from his father in 1981, and in 1982 he undertook drastic measures within the domain which was then rated among the best in Vosne-Romanée, but sadly, he died of an accidental death in 2004. The Engel domain was taken over by François Pinault in 2006, and today the Château Latour team (owned by the François Pinault group), under the guidance of Frédéric Engerer, is responsible for its development. The yields are rigorously controlled. The domain produces full-bodied and particularly racy wines, with complex aromas; their balance means that they can be cellared for a long time. René Engel, professor of oenology for 35 years at Dijon University, was an important pre-war figure for Burgundy winemaking. He was one of the founders of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and not only promoted his own wines remarkably well, but also the whole of the Côte d'Or in general, until his retirement in 1949.
From a plot of half a hectare with some very old vines (about 80 years old), Echézeaux from Domaine Eugénie delivers beautiful black fruit aromas and a very structured and powerful palate, but still well balanced despite the important tannic frame. The length is impressive.
