Information
Yves Gangloff is a major figure in the Rhône Valley and an artistic winemaker who expresses a unique sensibility through his wines. A rock music fan from the Alsace region, with a somewhat bohemian lifestyle, Yves settled in the area after meeting his future wife Mathilde when he was staying with his brother at the Château d'Ampuis in the 1970s. To make a living he started working as a labourer at Domaine Delas. Here, on the steep terraces of the Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu he got a feel for and learned the basics of viticulture. At the same time, Gaston Andre, a local winegrower offered the couple a plot of vines. And so the Gangloff myth began. In the early days, Mathilde and Yves sold their grapes to the trade but in 1992 they bottled their first vintage. Success came quickly so they expanded their vineyards which have been managed by their children Loup and Elsa since Mathilde's death in 2011.
This Côte-Rôtie is made from Syrah and a very tiny part of Viognier (5%), a white grape from the Rhône valley. Both have benefited from careful growth on terraces made of gneiss. The grapes are harvested by hand before being 100% destemmed and macerated for 3 weeks in temperature-controlled vats. 30 months’ ageing in barriques and demi-muid barrels allows the red wine to develop its fruity and floral aromas. The tannins are fine, even elegant. Crunchy on the palate, it showcases fruity notes. Its fleshy character means it pairs well with sauce-based meat.
