Bordeaux | 2010 vintage
2010 is undeniably one of the greatest successes ever recorded in Bordeaux, particularly for red wines. Following the highly praised 2009, the 2010 vintage stands out as a more classic year. The grands crus from Médoc reveal perfectly ripe, explosive fruit. These wines display a vibrant acidity and an impressive tannic structure, promising remarkable ageing potential. In fact, all the indicators are dialled up to near perfection for the reds. They offer perfect grape maturity combined with outstanding freshness, which was not always the case in 2009, for example. Experts are even likening it to 2005, another outstanding vintage from this decade, which, together with 2010, is destined for exceptional ageing. The only slight downside to this vintage profile is that these wines are fairly closed in their youth. The palate reveals an incredible structure, though it remains relatively restrained in terms of aromas. This is quite the opposite of 2009 which always very pleasant in its youth with easy to enjoy fruit-forward qualities.
While the grapes were exceptionally healthy, their relatively high alcohol content made for a somewhat tricky vinification. With fermentations set to last, the grapes had to be extracted very skilfully to avoid over-extraction by the end of the winemaking process.
The 2010 vintage is equally splendid for Sauternes and Barsac sweet wines, surpassing the already impressive 2009s, delivering not just richness, but also a remarkable finesse. All experts concur that this is an exceptional vintage for every estate in these two appellations, each shining in its own right, of course. A splendid vintage of superb acidity and exceptional richness. Probably very similar to the already legendary 2001.
Dry white wines are no exception, offering remarkable elegance and aromatic freshness.
