Bordeaux | 1964 vintage

An excellent vintage which was contrasted by torrential rain during the harvest. A hot and dry summer that encouraged the ripening of Merlot, which is the earliest ripening of the grape varieties. Consequently, Pomerol, Saint-Emilion, and Graves produced exceptional wines, rich, concentrated and powerful. Comparable in quality to the 1961 vintage, most of these wines are often underestimated and under priced. However, many estates situated in Médoc suffered from the rain in October which wiped out the slower-to-ripen Cabernet Sauvignon. With a few exceptions (Montrose and Latour), numerous châteaux (Lafite, Mouton,Lynch-Bages, Calon Ségur, etc.) produced thin wines, lacking depth. In Sauternes the harvest was spoilt by bad weather that resulted in acidic wines. There was, however, a very small amount of the harvest that managed to escape ¿disaster¿ and produce some very good wines. No d'Yquem was produced during this vintage.
