Beaujolais | 2012 vintage
Following a magical three years of vintages (2009, 2010 and 2011), Beaujolais experienced a more muted year in 2012 as weather conditions made work in the vineyards extremely difficult. It was a particularly cold winter, then hail caused significant damage to the vines, destroying over 20% of the harvest in some areas. This was followed by outbreaks of disease (mildew and oidium). There were major impacts on the harvests, which were sometimes reduced by half. Ruthless selection in the best domaines was required, but the healthy grapes were of good quality as they reaped the benefits of a few sunny days to reach peak ripeness. Vintages from Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent made a particularly good showing.
