Poulsard

Poulsard, often known as Ploussard, is one of the Jura's black grapes. It takes its name from its resemblance to sloe (prunelle in French), a kind of small prune. Representing 20-25% of the region's vines (2nd overall after Chardonnay, but making up 80% of the red vines), it is grown especially around Arbois and Pupillin. It is also grown in Ain and in Switzerland. Despite its relatively pale colour and its light structure, Poulsard can age quite well. Its well-reputed finesse, very fruity notes, round tannins and crystalline texture make for a coveted wine. There are even some delicate spicy notes that add a certain complexity to its already-accomplished profile.
