Domaine de Montcalmès

Having freed the family domain from the local cooperative winery 15 years ago, Frédéric Pourtalié has succeeded in positioning Domaine de Montcalmès as one of the region’s finest. Organic and biodynamic-inspired viticulture and natural, single-parcel vinifications produce elegant and fresh southern wines, suitable for long aging.

In 1998, Frédéric Pourtalié left his local co-operative to found Domaine de Montcalmès. He had already studied under the most demanding of producers: Alain Graillot at Crozes-Hermitage and Olivier Jullien (Mas Jullien) and Laurent Vaillé at La Grange des Pères. To explain, Montcalmès, La Grange des Pères and Mas de Daumas Gassac are all sited around the village of Aniane in the Terrasses du Larzac – an enormous terroir whose profile these three domains have succeeded in raising. Located some thirty kilometres north-west of Montpelier, the operation covers 22 hectares of Terrasses du Larzac-appellation vines. The wines of Montcalmès have grown continually in precision and balance, and are now ranked among the finest wines of the Languedoc.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...

BETTANE & DESSEAUVE

The range of reds now boasts three cuvées, a Grenache reminiscent of Château Rayas, the elegant Le Geai and the cuvée Terrasses du Larzac, with finer tannins than one would expect from the Languedoc, a dream of a wine.

LA REVUE DU VIN DE FRANCE

Frédéric Pourtalié is an experienced winemaker, having met much-deserved success since his first vintage in 1999. In 15 years, Montcalmès has become one of the Languedoc’s must-try references.
