        Bols

The Bols distillery opened in Amsterdam in 1575. Lucas Bols was a key shareholder in the Dutch East India Company, whose imports he used to produce his liqueurs. The business prospered but the family gradually broke away until eventually selling the company in 1813. After its purchase, business picked up again and Bols produced numerous spirits and liqueurs. The company, which expanded to include new distilleries, was popular in many European courts. This momentum accelerated after WWI with the construction of distilleries in other countries. Activities were developed to include non-alcoholic beverages following the acquisition of many different brands, although its juniper-based alcoholic drinks remained a key element of the business. At the start of the 21st century, in an increasingly dense and competitive environment, the company was bought by Rémy Cointreau.
