Plantation 1996 Pierre Ferrand Edition 2020 Cask n°06 Single Cask Collection
The wine
A Long Pond 22 year old distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2020 by Plantation The rum was aged for 21.5 years in bourbon casks in a tropical climate, for two years in cognac casks in France, and finally for six months in rye whiskey casks. Plantation was launched in 2003 by the Pierre Ferrand cognac house, which was founded in 1989. The house sources its casks from various distilleries and brokers but also owns the West India Rum Distillery in Barbados (WIRD) and has shares in National Rums of Jamaica, meaning it has exclusive access to Long Pond and Clarendon rums and plays a dual role as both a bottler and producer.
About the Producer Long Pond
The Long Pond distillery was founded in Trelawny in 1753, some 12 miles from Hampden, and is named after a mountain in the north of Jamaica. Seagram’‘s CEO Samuel Bronfman bought the distillery from the Jamaican government in the 1940s and began producing Captain Morgan there in 1944. After Seagram was disbanded and the Captain Morgan brand bought by Diageo, Long Pond joined National Rum of Jamaica, a company owned by the Jamaican government, Demerara Distillers Limited and Maison Ferrand. The distillery was closed from 2012 to 2017 and was almost destroyed in a fire in 2018. Thankfully, the damage was not too serious and the distillery’‘s John Dore pot stills and Blair column still continue to operate today, producing various profiles of very popular rums.
