The wine
Jurançon's wines did not wait for the creation of the AOC in 1936 to be appreciated by wine lovers: they were served in 1553 at the baptism of Henri IV. The vineyard's reputation rapidly spread across the globe; however, another victim of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, it virtually disappeared, before being reborn about twenty years ago thanks to some very astute winegrowers. Located to the south-west of Pau, Jurançon benefits from both the mildness of the ocean climate and the rigour of the mountains. The late summer, generally sunny and accompanied by warm winds, results in "Vendanges Tardives", with the harvests taking place between November and January. The "Jurançon Sec" AOC, which currently represents 75% of the region's production, did not come until much later in 1975. Jurançon's wines present sweet notes of candied fruit, quince, lychees, honey, cinnamon and toast, and have a capacity to age for more than 20 years.
