Rully 1er Cru Les Champs Cloux Duvernay 1988
The wine
Rully (AOC in 1939) is a Côte Chalonnaise appellation, situated in the Saône-et-Loire on the communes of Rully and Chagny. It has 23 climats classified premier cru. The most renowned of the premiers crus are: Pucelle, Les Margotés, Grésigny, Meix Cadot, Chapitre, Les Cloux and the Clos Saint-Jacques.
The reds cover just over 133 hectares (37 of which are premier cru). The whites cover the majority of the vineyards, with just over 223 hectares (nearly 59 of which are premier cru).
With a château which has been owned by the same family for six generations, a church and elegant steeple, beautiful and fancy houses, Rully (pronounced Ruilly) is a lovely old village with a typical Burgundy atmosphere. The appellation produces village and premiers crus red and white wines. It has also been one of the most important producers of Burgundy crémant since the 19th century.
The slight differences between the wines comes from the various terroirs that vary in terms of sunshine and altitude. Between 230 and 300 metres altitude, the slopes produce wines that can rival the best of the neighbouring Côte de Beaunes. The Pinot Noir is planted in brown slightly clayey soils and the Chardonnay in clay limestone soils.
Rully red, a particularly refined and elegant wine, is ruby-red purple in colour. These wines have aromas of spices, dark fruit with liquorice undertones. Very fresh and fruity, they mature quickly and preserve their qualities for quite a time.
