Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz Clos du Caillou 2001
The wine
A symbolic cuvée of the domain, even from young, La Guiraude showcases all the potential of the Syrah. Only produced during noteworthy vintages, La Guiraude is a single grape variety whose vines were mostly planted by Alain Graillot in 1986. Harvested by hand, it is then aged in barriques. Paired with black pudding cottage pie or stuffed quail, this deep ruby red wine has a flavoursome and structured palate. Very concentrated, it entices us with its finesse and intense aromatic persistence. It also exudes the typical Syrah aromas of the appellation: ripe black fruit and spices. A very fine cuvée which certain critics cannot help comparing with the Cathelin of Domaine Chave… and quite right too!
About the Producer Clos du Caillou
Sylvie Vacheron manages Le Clos du Caillou with an expert hand. The vineyard was indeed once a clos, or walled plot, of 17 hectares but today the vines are planted across 53 hectares in the Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations. The terroir is of a very high quality, primarily comprising sand and galets roulés with excellent filtering properties. Sylvie Vacheron runs the vineyard and cultivates it with loving care. The soil is enriched with organic compost, the plots are tilled regularly, herbicides are avoided completely and harvesting is manual. Sylvie's determination has paid off as this is now one of the top domains in the appellation.
