Sierra de Gredos Comando G Navatalgordo 2022

The wine

Comando G Navatalgordo is a red wine with a fragrant nose of cherry, blood orange, delicate floral fragrances, thyme and a hint of rose petals. On the palate, it has superb flavours of sweet and tart cherry with hints of cranberry, pomegranate, stoniness and herbs.
Like the heroes of the children’s cartoon series Comando G, who saved Earth from enemy forces, the winery of the same name has preserved fascinating and threatened plots of land in the Sierra de Gredos, elevating this little-known region to the status of Spanish wine Mecca.
From one of the highest winegrowing areas in Gredos, in the village of Navatalgordo, this wine is characterised by its vineyard’s predominantly granitic, clay-free soils. The 60-year-old vines are cultivated in a traditional and respectful way, with the grapes harvested by hand and transported immediately to the cellar. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and whole bunches comes first, followed by ageing in “foudres” (large wooden tuns) and concrete vats for 10 months. The wine is then bottled without prior clarification or filtration.

Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia are childhood friends. They decided to crzeate Comando G in 2008 in the mountainous Sierra de Gredos region, not far from Madrid. The went on the search for vineyards planted in the most difficult, remote areas. Garnacha (Grenache) is their grape variety of choice, and their ambition is to make wines which rival the elegance and finesse of a Burgundian Pinot Noir or a Syrah from Hermitage. The 10-hectare domain is entirely biodynamic, and the vines aged 50 to 80 years, planted between 850 and 1,200 metres of altitude on soils of sand, granite, ardoise and quartz. The combination of well-draining soils, high altitude and a clement micro-climate guarantees a long growing season, wines which are not too high in alcohol and extremely refined.
