Cuvée 741 Extra-Brut Jacquesson

The wine

Jacquesson champagnes are wines with a history, produced by a maison with one of the best reputations among connoisseurs. Founded in Dizy in 1798 by Claude Jacquesson, these champagnes were from the outset considered among Emperor Napoleon 1st's favourites. It was this maison that took out a patent on its muselet wire cage design in 1844, and would be involved in the creation of Krug. A variety of owners came and went until 1974, when the maison was acquired by the Chiquet family. Today, the sons of Jean Chiquet – Laurent and Jean-Hervé – run the company with great flair. The vines are spread across thirty or so hectares in Avize, Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers; Jacquesson complements these with a handful of regular, carefully selected additions. Jacquesson champagnes have a strong personality (especially the parcel-based cuvées), and are characterised by low dosage, intensity and sophistication. Over time, this maison has gradually become a watchword for connoisseurs' champagnes, delivering on the potential of the terroirs it depicts with incredible fidelity, limiting the doses to the strict minimum, ageing its cuvées for as long as necessary before offering them for sale. For this reason, the wines (a large part of which are vinified in wood and dosed as Extra Brut) always have a pronounced, often surprising character. Since the maison's takeover, production has fallen considerably, with Jacquesson preferring to focus on its 28 hectares of vines and the grapes that it selects with the greatest care for purchase. Every year it assigns its non-vintage brut a number – 738, 739, etc. In this way, it acknowledges the style of each vintage and encourages connoisseurs to age their wines. And all Jacquesson cuvées age marvellously well, with or without late disgorgement. This sublime producer is one of our absolute Champagne favourites.
Produced using the 2013 vintage as its base year, 741 is Jacquesson's main cuvée... the BSA (non-vintage brut) which accounts for 90% of its production. It is a sublime champagne; very pure, clean and lively, with a great mineral palette. Perfect as an apéritif.

About the Producer Jacquesson

Jacquesson champagnes are a long established name and the house is one of the most reputed among connoisseurs. Claude Jacquesson founded the company in Dizy in 1798. From the very beginning its champagne was reputed to be the Emperor's favourite (Napoleon 1). This was also the house which patented the cork wire in 1844 and helped establish Maison Krug. A succession of owners ran Maison Jacquesson until 1974 when it was acquired by the Chiquet family. Today, Jean Chiquet's sons, Laurent and Jean-Hervé, run the company with panache. The vineyards are planted on around 30 hectares in Avize, Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers and complemented by regular and carefully selected supplies of bought-in grapes. Jacquesson champagnes have a strong personality (especially the single parcel cuvées) and stand out for their low sugar levels, intensity and distinction. This house has gradually become the standard bearer for high-quality champagne, expressing the illustrious potential of its terroirs with incredible fidelity, reducing dosage to a strict minimum and allowing its cuvées the time they need to mature before putting them on the market. Because of this, the wines (primarily vinified in wood and dosed at Extra-Brut level) always have a distinct and sometimes surprising character. Production has reduced considerably since the Chiquet family took over Maison Jacquesson. Every year, it gives its non-vintage Brut (BSA) a number - 738, 739 etc. This is a way to identify the style of each vintage and to encourage fans to age the wines. All Jacquesson cuvées age beautifully, whether late-disgorged or not. This sublime champagne house is one of our favourites in the region.
