Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens de Courcel (Domaine) 2008
The wine
The Premier Cru Les Rugiens is one of the highest quality plots in the Pommard appellation, capable of rivalling some Grands Crus. Harvested from vines located on a plot of land halfway up a hill south of Pommard near Volnay and grown in stony marl-clay soil, a third of its ageing period is spent in new oak barrels. This wine is very spicy, highly concentrated and refined, standing out through its wonderful persistence.
About the Producer Domaine de Courcel
No other domaine better embodies the Pommard appellation than Domaine Courcel. Over 10 hectares, this domaine produces the greatest red wines of the town thanks to exceptional terroirs such as the Premier Cru Grand Clos des Epenots (which it runs as a monopole) or even the Rugiens which surpass many grands crus. Since 1996, Anne Bommelaer and Marie de Courcel have managed the domaine while Gilles de Courcel, assisted by Yves Confuron, is in charge of the vinification process. The vineyards are managed organically (not certified), and the family’s demands are ever present.
