Lot presentation

Château Siran 1999

The wine

Produced from a sandy, gravelly soil, Siran's wines are typical Margaux grands crus. Powerful and refined, they strike a balance between tannins, fruit and acidity. The grape varieties are fairly distinctive for the appellation: 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.

About the Producer Château Siran

Siran is a major wine in the Margaux galaxy. Owned by the Miailhe family, who have been wine brokers since the middle of the 19th century, Siran used to belong to Toulouse-Lautrec's grandparents. It is currently the fifth generation who manage the property, represented by Edouard Miailhe since 2007. Note that, prior to the arrival of Edouard Miailhe, the bottles were illustrated with an original artistic work. Small (25 hectares) but with a magnificent terroir, Siran's vineyard lies on soil made up of gravel and pebbles; the wine has the particularity of containing a high proportion of Petit Verdot in the blend every year (up to 15% in some vintages). As a result it has a strong colour and sustained length on the palate. Siran is produced using very traditional techniques, both in the vineyard and the winery. Siran's wines are powerful and develop intense aromas of red and black berries. Aging for 15 months in oak barrels gives the wine an imposing tannic structure making it suited to long cellaring. In the 2003 revision of the cru bourgeois classification, Siran was granted the coveted title of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. This distinction is no longer valid today following complaints that led to the classification being discontinued, but it remains a testament to the quality of this wine that is an excellent representative of Margaux's classic elegance.
