Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Epenots de Courcel (Domaine) 2009
The wine
There are four premier cru wine areas within the Pommard appellation. Pommard Premier Cru Grand Clos des Epenots is a monopole owned by Domaine de Courcel. Its 4.5 hectares produce almost 50% of the property’s wines and it is one of the finest quality terroirs in the appellation. Lying to the north, the soil is rich in clay and chalk and strewn with boulders which provide excellent drainage for the 60-year-old vines. The wine has a nose of red and dark fruit with Pommard’s characteristic peppery aromas. The palate is concentrated, with defined tannins that soften after 5 to 10 years. One to look out for.
About the Producer Domaine de Courcel
No other domaine better embodies the Pommard appellation than Domaine Courcel. Over 10 hectares, this domaine produces the greatest red wines of the town thanks to exceptional terroirs such as the Premier Cru Grand Clos des Epenots (which it runs as a monopole) or even the Rugiens which surpass many grands crus. Since 1996, Anne Bommelaer and Marie de Courcel have managed the domaine while Gilles de Courcel, assisted by Yves Confuron, is in charge of the vinification process. The vineyards are managed organically (not certified), and the family’s demands are ever present.
