Chassagne-Montrachet Bernard Grapin 1981
The wine
Before phylloxera (1871), the Chassagne-Montrachet vineyards didn't produce red wines, except a few acres of the famous Montrachet which is in a class of its own. Today, roughly half of the vineyards are planted with Chardonnay and produce great white wines. The red wines are very colourful, full-bodied and often quite fleshy. Their structure often makes them similar to the Côte de Nuits wines. Their classic aroma is stamped with tones of cherry-kirsch and blackcurrant.
