Lot presentation

Château Desmirail 3ème Grand Cru Classé 2005

The wine

Château Desmirail produces elegant wines of exceptional delicacy. Stemming from the exceptional terroir of Margaux, characterized by pebbles and sand, this wine is elegant and incredibly refined. The grapes are meticulously selected. Predominantly crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the blend varies from one vintage to the next. When we visited, we were told that more Cabernet Franc was being added to the new vintages. The high proportion of Merlot in the blend was in fact a trademark. The wine is aged for 18 months, with 12 months in new oak casks (around 50%).
On tasting, fruity flavours emerge, together with aromas of black fruit, mocha and liquorice. This beautifully balanced wine is one of the most popular in the Margaux appellation. A perfect partner for lamb, calf’s liver or hare ‘à la royale’. An exceptional wine for equally exceptional dishes.

About the Producer Château Desmirail

Château Desmirail dates back a long way. A beacon of Médoc viticulture, the estate traces its roots back to 1742 under Jean-Baptiste Desmirail and his wife Marguerite Rauzan du Ribail. In the mid-19th century, the château was acquired by Mr Sipière, the owner of the famous Château Margaux at the time. He elevated Desmirail to the rank of third Grand Cru Classé 1855. The estate was already predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but there were also a few Petit Verdot vines. On the eve of World War II, the estate was the property of three successive owners. Robert de Mendelssohn (the famous German composer’s nephew), Martial Michel, a French glove maker from the north of France, and finally Château Palmer.
In 1980, Château Desmirail came into the hands of Lucien Lurton, who already owned ten estates, including six Crus Classés Today, Denis Lurton, heir to the estate and one of his 10 sons, continues to devote the utmost care and attention to ensuring the long-term future of Château Desmirail. Château Desmirail is one of the most authentic estates in the Bordeaux region, combining sustainable viticulture with an exceptional terroir.
